What happens if marriage is not reported to SS office?
A friend of mine recently married a US Citizen.
Does the US citizen spouse have to report her new marriage status to the SS office? What happens if she fails to report the change?
It is not necessary to report the marriage to the SSA, unless applying for retirement/disability/survivor benefits or already receiving benefits.
But if there is a name change, the name change should be reported to SSA and a new SS card will be issued.

US citizen spouse does get disability benefits. Im aware that failing to report this change would bring trouble (and I think even considered fraud?) on the Social Security side, but would it also have a negative effect on the whole GC process? or is it just a whole separate issue with separate consequences?
The US citizens failure to report the marriage could result in fines or prison time if the lack of reporting it causes them to receive a bigger benefit than theyre entitled to. But it would be a separate issue that wont directly affect the GC process. Indirect effects might occur, such as if the citizen cant attend the GC interview and/or cant present evidence of living together due to being in prison.
