My parents, who are green card holders themselves, have applied for a green card for me in 2005, and I received the Choice of Agent and Address letter from the US embassy almost 6 months back.
In the meanwhile, I got married and my passport has been changed to reflect the same.
Both I and my husband are currently employed in India and ours is a joint family with my husband’s parents. They are dependent on us for financial and familial support since they are not in a position to look after themselves independently. They also have a history of medical conditions which include hypertension etc. We also have a son who is due to start his schooling soon.
Due to these obligations, I can not think of immigrating for at least next 4-5 years. However, I dont want to give up the option completely.
Is there any provision of deferment / postponement of green card at this stage?
You already voided your existing application by getting married before your parent became a US citizen.
So you cant immigrate for several years anyway. One parent would have to become a US citizen and file a new petition for you.
Hey Jackolantern,
Thank you very much!!!
Cant the sponsorship be converted to that for my entire family (Husband + kid)??
Secondly, although my parents are only green card holders, the petition is co-sponsored by my mothers brother who has been a citizen for the last 10 years. Does that have any effect?
Cant the sponsorship be converted to that for my entire family (Husband + kid)?? No. There is no category for the married children of permanent residents. Your GC petition is dead, and needs to be restarted once your parents become US citizens.
Postpone USA green card processing
