I am a Canadian Citizen and my wife is US Citizen. We got married in India (religiously) but couldnt get out marriage legalize because none of us were Indian citizens.
Then we decided to legalize our marriage and we did that in the US recently at the courthouse.
Now, when she files I-130 for me, under the sworn affidavits from family and friends, is it OK if our family members put how we did religious ceremony in India or should just mention the legal marriage in the US (only).
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I do not see anything wrong with being truthful. USCIS are aware many people have both a religious and legal ceremony. The fewer the untruths in your application, the better for you long term
thank you ananga73....really appreciate it.
USCIS is all about paper work and paper trail.
Do you have any paperwork to prove that you had a religious marriage? If not, use your civil marriage done in the good old USA as your official date of marriage. You can talk about your religious marriage at the interview.
If you list your religious marriage on your AOS papers, you will be asked to submit supporting docs which will delay your process for months or even years in some cases.
Like I said, the government is all about paperwork and paper trail... good luck...
