How can my mom travel prior to receive the actual Green Card?

I sponsored my mom to get her green card and she got her immigration visa stamped on her passport (in China) with the expiration date of Sept 8. She is coming on Aug 26th and I am planning to take her to a cruise to Mexico. What document can she use for re-entry since she doesnt have her actual green card yet?

When your mother will arrive in US upon her arrival she will be issued a I-551 ( processed for GC ) at the airport. That is actually temporary green card till she receives the actual card & she can use that for travel. Hope that answers your question.

Just to clarify: the I-551 is a stamp in the passport, its not an actual card.
Thanks, Jackolantern! So upon her arrival the immingration officer would stamp I551 on her passport (serve as temp card) so she can use that to go in and out of the country?
