When is temporary IR-1 exchanged for permanent green card?
My wife (a foreigner) received IR-1 visa in her passport. When is she supposed to receive a permanent green card? Does she need to apply to INS after entering the country, or the card will be sent automatically after she crosses the border?

It will be automatically sent to her within 30 days after arrival in the US. If not received in 30 days, she should make an Infopass appointment at a USCIS office to inquire about it. If she doesnt already have a Social Security number, a Social Security card also should be sent automatically within the 30 days, if a Social Security card was requested on the immigrant visa paperwork.
