Hello everyone,

I am a USC and will be filing for my future spouse who is on work permit and has a job in the city where we live. We will be getting married in early June. We have been living together as BF/GF since more than a year and have our names on the lease. However I have to move to a different city in a different state within 2 months to start college. He has to stay behind because of his job and is in a contract till the end of year with the company he works for. Will this be a problem during our interview which would be approx. 6 months from now? Has anyone successfully gotten a GC here living in different cities due to job/studies? I cannot defer my college by a year as it is specialised program and very hard to get admission into, not offered in every state. Will we be grilled because of my moving to another city? This is not a sudden decision and I have acceptance letter from my university from end of last year. Kindly advise.

Anyone please who has any experience or knowledge regarding this? Can we explain that my since my soon to be spouse has long term job and I have to move for studies, is the reason for us living apart? Considering the economy we dont want him to risk looking for a job where I am moving as I would eventually move back to the same city and state after finishing my degree.

Living apart does make things a bit harder, but work and studies are considered legitimate reasons for a temporary separation. Make sure to preserve evidence that you were living together before you left for studies, and also evidence that you continue to be in close contact with each other during the separation, such as frequent phone calls and evidence of visits to each others cities. And of course, evidence you are studying in one place while your spouse is working in another.

I cannot defer my college by a year as it is specialised program and very hard to get admission into, not offered in every state. That doesnt mean you cant defer it. If they dont have a deferral option thats one thing, but if they have a deferral option and you ask for it and they say no, youll still keep your place in the originally planned program. Unless they have some kind of draconian policy that requires you to lose your existing admission before you know the deferral decision.

We will surely preserve evidence of phone calls, air tickets, photos etc. like you said. I am going to maintain my present address for all my important mails and accounts like bank etc and not change my Drivers license etc when I move to the new city as like I said I intend to return after finishing this program.
Unfortunately I cannot defer now as the deadline to do so was last month and they clearly say that after that NO EXCEPTIONS. I have already paid a hefty deposit to secure my place which is nonrefundable. Anyways, I dont wish to defer now as it would mean a waste of one year and let me just say I am not at the right side of age to afford that

Ours is a genuine marriage and we have been dating since quite sometime now and even living together since more than a year with common lease and utility bills and even share the same phone account. So I am hoping we can demonstrate a genuine relationship before our marriage at our interview.

Even anyone was in similar kind of situation and were successful despite living apart due to job/education please do let me know if you encountered problems due to the same. Thanks!!!
