Criminal Issues and Green Card

I have a friend who has been arrested for a theft (stayed in jail for one night before he got his bail)and then the court authorized the state to prosecute the case as a midemeanor under Texas penal code 12.44(b)as a Misdemeanor-A and theft >=$500 <$1500. This happened in 2004 and its been 5 years. Now he is trying to apply for his Green Card and all he found that he will not get his GC with this type of misdemeanor. Any suggestions are welcome from anybody with similar type of experiences. We need some hope to apply for GC.

If this is his only conviction, he qualifies for a "petty offense exception".

Thank you very much for your reply

He needs an immigration attorney to assist with the filing given the criminal issue in his background to have it processed with the best chance of approval.
