Where does one begin to change names? I got my SSN in 2001. After I received my EAD, I went change my name on my SS card to my husbands. They took my info and copied my docs and said they have to wait for USCIS to verify they authenticity of my docs. (4-6 wks).
Well, after 5wks, I went back and I was told my name hasnt been verified and will not be verified because USCIS has my maiden name and cannot verify my new name. Ok, why didnt they tell me then? Or why did they even bother to process my info when they knew that USCIS will not verify my docs? I couldnt change my name before my EAD came in because my visa had expired (which doesnt matter when you are an F1 in sch.). I have given up, but still, I would like to know where one begins with a name change.
Ive done the same thing, but the SSN office just looked at my marriage certificate and didnt even bother looking at my passport.. I gave my old SSN card, my marriage certificate and drivers license and I asked to have my name changed. In 2 weeks I got my new card.
I suggest you try it again with a different person maybe..
If you dont have a drivers license yet you can use your EAD to get one, but be sure to show your marriage certificate to the local DMV so they will do the name change on your license. Once you have that, I would try with the SSN office again

I got my DL in 2001. I need a new SS card to do a name change on my DL, that is a req. in my state. I have been in that SS office 3X, I think i have given up. The 1st guy told me I need a letter from sch stating that I am a student. I didnt even bother, I went back. The 2nd time I was told my visa is expired Then I decided to wait for EAD and went back. Then my docs had to be verified. Now my docs will never be verified because the names are different. It did not make any sense that I have to start a name change with the USCIS. I have given up. Its ok anyway, I have publications in my maiden name, so its ok to keep it.

Oh goody.. then I guess Illinois makes things a little easier then. I was able to change my drivers license without even showing my passport. They only wanted to see marriage certificate and old license, thats it.
When you have your interview for your Green Card you could probably ask to have it issued under your married name, that would probably be the start for you to be able to change SSN and drivers license. Just a thought
Good luck!!!
