can I keep my student status while I apply for a green card?

Im currently on a F1 visa, my boyfriend is getting his divorce papers in January and we are planning to get married...

Is is possible to keep my student visa while applying for a green card and a work permit?
I just dont wanna stop my school.. and I payed already for the winter quarter...
or we should wait and apply after my quarter is done and just drop my school and wait for my work permit and the interview... and then continue my school

thank you

You dont have to stop school. Actually you get married, and you both file an I-130 along with an I-485 and a I-765 so you can apply for a social security and then give that to the school. Once you are approved for a conditional residence greenc ard (I-551) then you can apply for a reduction in price of your tuition credit price bcs you are already a resident CR-6. That is if you are going to public school. Or you could apply for state or federal student aid.

Once you become a permanent resident 2 years later, then you become an IR-6 LPR.

There is no need to stop going to school when you get married and apply for the GC. In fact, youll have more freedoms and entitlements than a foreign student - for example, you may be eligible for reduced tuition, and you can take a quarter off or even fail a class without losing your status.

You do lose (in the short-term) some of the benefits of the student visa. Once youre married, even if you havent applied for the GC yet, DO NOT TRAVEL outside the US thinking your stamped I-20 will get you back in. It wont. You shouldnt be outside the US for 60-90 days prior to your planned wedding, and you wont be able to leave afterward until your AP is approved.

Do u know how much time will take for that? I mean till I get approved for a conditional residence?
