I submitted my family based I-485 in Jan 2005 and only had my interview in May 2006 at the Philadelphia office (they lost some of my docs and I had to re-apply). Since then I have been told that my case is in background check status. I keep receiving these letters from them stating that I need to check back in 6 months and I am getting really frustrated.
I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP, ADVICE, SUPPORT.

Ive been in the same boat since Dec 2004.
Yes, it seems to be within the reasonable limits... for a case that involved both RFE and NC, thats it.
Thanks for your response basselal. I thought it would make me feel better knowing other people are in the same boat, but it didnt. This is ridiculous. I am contemplating suing them, but I havent found a lawyer yet willing to do it. I was planning on going to my home country for vacation, but I see the travel doc application fee is now over $300! If that is not exploitation...then I dont know what is...this is on top of having to apply for a new EAD every year...no wonder theyre taking their time. The longer we stay in this status the more money they make....if we were really security threats you would have figured they would have more urgency in their processing.
Is my situation normal?
