New Travel rules can i re-enter USA with my green card or do i need a passport?

I am a canadian citizen living in usa and i have a us green card.I would like to go to canada for a week and return to usa by plane. But new rules went into effect on oct 1 2007 saying that all people including usa citizens need a passport to re-enter usa if coming by plane. My canadian pp is expired. Can i re-enter usa by plane with my green card?
thanks

Can i re-enter usa by plane with my green card? Yes. The GC is one of the docs allowed instead of a passport.

how is a LPR exempt from that requirement?

I found this from on the following link http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/va...nts_needed.xml

Documents You Will Need to Enter the United States

"Travel Documents for U.S. Citizens Under WHTI
U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents
Visitors/Non-immigrants

U.S. Citizens: The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will soon require all travelers to and from the Americas, the Caribbean, and Bermuda to have a passport or other accepted form of documentation to enter or reenter the United States. The program will be rolled out in phases. The proposed timeline is as follows:

As of January 23, 2007, ALL persons*, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document.
As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons*, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

*Lawful permanent residents (LPRs), refugees, and asylees will continue to be able to use their Alien Registration Card (Form I-551), issued by DHS, or other valid evidence of permanent residence status or refugee or asylee status to apply for entry to the United States."

So i guess i can use the gc.The canadian consulate in L.A has been completely moronic in being unable to inform me that i could use my gc in lieu of passport for travel.Totally clueless.Just a complete useless, farce the canadian consulate is.I recommend canadians in the LA area who need to use the consulate get second opinions on whatever advice they dispense. They are as useful as burger flippers at mcdonalds-actually that is an insult to all burger flippers-sorry!
